NOKIA smartphones! New company in Finland

NOKIA returning to mobile device markets via exclusive licence for IP and brand with HMD Global

Nokia, the "mothership" also behind Sailfish OS team Jolla Oy, have their smartphone brand held by Microsoft for a while more, but today Nokia announced a new IP and licencing agreement. New Finnish based company HMD Global is to make Nokia branded phones and tablets using Nokia patents and having Nokia member on board for ensuring quality, design and Nokia's consumer focused innovation.

Russian company to use Sailfish OS components

Update, May 11, 2016: Jolla officially confirms licensing of Sailfish OS to a Russian company "Open Mobile Platform".

May 6, 2016, Innopolis, Tatarstan, Russia. New company "Открытая мобильная платформа" (Open Mobile Platform) is about to begin the development of domestic Russian operating system for mobile devices. The new mobile operating system is suggested to be based on components of Sailfish OS. The company is already hiring employees. Russia aims to reduce the use of foreign mobile operating systems from the current 95% to 75% by 2020, and to 50% by 2025. Android and iOS down?

Sailfish OS 2.0.1.11 Taalojärvi for Jolla Phone

On May 9, 2016 after a long wait of more than 6 months since the previous public release 2.0.0.10, Jolla today released a system update for Jolla Phone. Jolla Tablets got this update already a week ago. Early access testing phase took long while Jolla was hunting down a bug affecting to received phone calls. The bug has not yet confirmed to be fixed, but it's strongly suggested to be so.

Intex releases entry-level smartphone with Sailfish OS in India 

On February 22, 2016, Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain, Intex introduced the 2nd official Sailfish OS smartphone ever to be released later in spring to the markets in India. Intex aims for a budget phone to begin with their own story on this OS.

[News] Jolla agrees debts, financing of $12M, new employees

Application for debt restructuring cancelled. Year 2016 secured with new financing. New employees being interviewed.

In autumn 2015 there were sad news: Employees laid off, debts on hold, file for debt restructuring. Jolla's 3rd death valley, pretty close to actual bankruptcy, was passed on December and now Jolla shares quite positive news.

This is a news analysis on Jolla's Press Release published on May 3, 2016, reflecting the latest news to those shared back in 2015. Sailfish OS seems to be having the sails up quite well right now. Will there be some wind too?

The last Jolla Tablet orders

Updated on April 20, 2016. On the unfortunate Jolla Tablet campaign, Jolla is currently sending new invitations. Earlier, an email sent to all Indiegogo contributors mentioned April 14, 2016 as the last day to finalize the order and April 16, 2016 as the last day to fill a refund form. Also a reminder on this was sent via email later. Currently, new invitations are sent to those who are ignoring the invitation, and new invitations are supposed to roll out weekly as long as none of them are ignored any more.

Additional to an important reminder, there's an interesting update: Support for biometric scanner for Sailfish OS is on the way.

Promise on Sailfish OS Turing Phone by TRI

April 2016 launch of Turing Phone, specially encrypted smartphone, cover and speaker made of some "neverdonedinium" 2.5 times stronger than titanium. Promised by Turing Robotic Industries Corp. TRI has a deal with Jolla on using the Finnish mobile operating system Sailfish OS.

Your Fairphone 2 can now run Sailfish OS, gesture based mobile operating system by Jolla, Finland. Unofficial version was made available by Sailfish OS porter Matti Lehtimäki.

Earlier, we shared a warning to our readers to keep some distance with any possible upcoming financing campaigns for a promised new Sailfish OS Turing Phone to be manufactured in Salo, Finland (image). The local newspapers are positive on TRI's future plans, but some of the national ones have found reasons for skeptic posts too.

Those who ordered Jolla Tablet via Jolla Shop in autumn 2015 can expect a full refund in 2-3 weeks. To those who bough a perk via Indiegogo earlier, Juhani Lassila, Head of Communications at Jolla shares that the process continues on its all parts.

Sony XPeria towards Linux buildroot enabling also #SailfishOS

Sony calls in Kernel developers to support Linux  

Additional to Linux IoT solutions, these awesome steps Sony is taking will also enable building Sailfish OS for Sony XPeria models in much larger scale than already done. In the best case all the models will run on a same Linux kernel. The builds are of course not limited to Sailfish OS only, for example AOSP based mobile operating systems will benefit too.

Jolla Tablets in China

Jolla tried to deliver more tablets, now sold by others on Taobao  

After Jolla's financial situation was partially resolved in December 2015 they did their best to deliver more slates to the Jolla Tablet campaign participants on Indiegogo. Jolla got 540 more, missed 400 slates already sold to others, and had to promise almost 10 000 backers a refund in two portions. Juhani Lassila from Jolla was very transparent on the China situation when I asked about it.
