System update 1.1.7 Björnträsket available for test users

Release notes: Sailfish OS 1.1.7.24 Björnträsket (Early access release) for Jolla phone

Jolla has released their next Sailfish OS system update to the users signed into the Early Access program. They have also shared the official release notes and the change log for this next Sailfish OS version. The Early Access group is testing the release before it's shared for everybody.

Update, August 27th: 4th release, Sailfish OS 1.1.7.28, rolling out for small group of regular users additional to Early Adopters

Update, August 27th:

Release notes were today updated with
"1.1.7.28 will be rolled out to early access users and a small group of regular users soon. The source for updates sometimes taking hours has not been found yet, the on-device update texts have been adjusted to warn about this issue. If you encounter a long or incomplete update, please tell us."
Since the latest test release to the same group, sailors at Jolla have fixed for example YouTube playback issues.

There are still few open bugs not yet gathered into release notes, and one question on privacy is still missing the last part of full answer, For the most careful users, it might be worth waiting a while more before updating.

Update, August 20th:

Jolla expanded the test group to some regular users additional to Early Access users. 1.1.7.27 was shared to larger group, and Jolla hopes to receive feedback of the update process itself.

The bug causing update process to freeze or take hours sometimes has not yet been solved, and for that feedback with logs from Sailfish OS journal would be especially welcome.

Update, August 13th:

Rolling out today as the 3rd test release (for Early Adopters only), Sailfish OS 1.1.7.27 fixes a reboot issue when using hotspot with GPS and an icon scaling issue for favourite settings.

The source for updates sometimes taking hours has not been found yet, the on-device update texts have been adjusted to warn about this issue.

After testing, if found stable enough, this version is expected to be released for everybody within one week. Release notes

Update, July 27th:

Sailfish OS 1.1.7.25, 2nd RC for Early Adopters was rolled out July 27th after Jolla fixed a package management issue found in the first release.

The final release for everybody was originally planned for the last week of July, but it's been delayed as further testing and fixes have been needed. One of few of these reported bugs might have something to do with need for more testing, delaying the public release. Especially this bug is delaying the update for sure.

Original post, July 15th:

First released to Early Adopters

Sailfish OS 1.1.7.24 is the early access release of upgrade 1.1.7. During the next week Jolla will collect feedback, fix issues if necessary, followed by releasing this upgrade to all users

If connected to the internet, and your account is subscribed for early access releases, your Jolla should receive an OS update notification shortly.

UPDATE: Despite what Jolla shares about the free space needed, I would recommend a lot more. There's a balancing operation to the file system included in this update, and to make it run in reasonable time, I'd recommend having max 9GB storage used before starting to install Björnträsket. This value is from personal experiences with btrfs balancing.

Before installing
  • Please ensure that you have ~1.5GB of free disk space before attempting to upgrade your Jolla
  • If you use phonehook from OpenRepos, uninstall it before upgrading
  • If you use patchmanager, revert all applied patches before upgrading
  • If your device is running software version lower than 1.0.4.20 and have WareHouse app installed (i.e you are using OpenRepos), disable all openrepo repositories before attempting to upgrade your device
  • Take a backup of your data before attempting to upgrade your device. A successful backup operation is indicated by a green dot in the UI

While installing
  • Do not reboot the device while the update is in progress.
  • The device screen may blank out during the update process, you may waken the display by a short press on the power key to monitor the progress.

Update: After installing

  • If you can't find your music files, you need to update your media tracker using Sailfish OS Tools (available as an app in Jolla Store, installing that will add the new options in Settings)

Highlights

  • New gcc 4.8 based tool chain is used on SailfishOS platform from this release onwards, bringing C++11, among other things
  • Alien Dalvik (Android support): Added 'Android Support' settings to Settings > System > in the 'Info' section
  • Option to prevent Android apps from accessing your contacts
  • Option to Stop/Start Android support
  • Added a settings page for Android applications in Settings > App from where you can control how the installed application works on your Jolla device (Force stop, Clear cache, Clear data, and running the app on background). Having the option to run Android applications on background enables receiving notifications for Android messaging apps even when the app is closed.
  • Better WLAN connection handling for Android apps
  • Introduce certificate handling middleware (p11-kit). All crypto libraries now share one CA store.
  • Update to PulseAudio 6.0, improving Bluetooth audio
  • Possibility to choose different keyboard layouts for Bluetooth keyboards if paired with one for different languages via Settings > System > Text input > Active layout

Security fixes

CVE-2013-7423 CVE-2014-0172 CVE-2014-8116 CVE-2014-8117 CVE-2014-8484 CVE-2014-8485 CVE-2014-8501 CVE-2014-8502 CVE-2014-8503 CVE-2014-8504 CVE-2014-8737 CVE-2014-9402 CVE-2014-9447 CVE-2014-9496 CVE-2015-0247 CVE-2015-1472 CVE-2015-1473 CVE-2015-1572 CVE-2015-2806 CVE-2015-3143 CVE-2015-3144 CVE-2015-3145 CVE-2015-3148 CVE-2015-3153

Known issues

OS update process:

  • If you have phonehook from OpenRepos installed uninstall it before upgrading.
  • Currently, checks on available disk space happens very late during the OS upgrade process and will fail in the installation phase if the disk space is low. Normally there should be an error note asking you to free some disk space and try again, but in some marginal cases it might not be shown. Should this happen, free some disk space and try to install the OS update again.
  • OS update may fail due to some other reasons too, for example it may have installed some packages from the new release and still have something left from the old. If the device can boot up, you can try to recover by doing the following. If not, you can attempt to recover the device using the recovery mode.
    • Delete the file /home/nemo/.cache/store-client/os-info
    • Stop the store-client process (for e.g. pkill store-client)
    • Reopen Settings app, check for updates again and attempt to install the OS update again
  • We have also noted that if the OS update is attempted while there is long queue of installation of apps from the Store, the system may end up in mixed state (for e.g. select all the apps from startup wizard, and start the system update already while the apps are being installed). In such cases, the OS update appears to be stalled, however it is just waiting for the installations to complete before attempting to upgrade the OS. Just wait patiently, the worst thing to do here is to reboot the device!
