Jolla phone update: Sailfish OS 1.1.4.29 Äijänpäivänjärvi

Jolla system upgrade 13 - Now for everybody

Sailfish OS Äijänpäivänjärvi was first released to test users, and after a few weeks of feedback, to all users on May 4th, 2015: "We'll start rolling out the update to everyone today. If possible, update with the device connected to a charger. If you have phonehook from OpenRepos installed uninstall it before upgrading. Please ensure that you have ~1.5GB of free disk space before attempting to upgrade your Jolla."

Important: This upgrade will break the Facebook account on Jolla, even more than what was informed earlier

Update: Recommending not to install yet. Lot of possible bugs/issues

Jolla delivered this update two months after the previous public release. SailfishOS 1.1.4.29 Äijänpäivänjärvi introduces keyboard split in landscape use (optional), instant email receiving with IMAP PUSH feature, landscape view to the Maps application and new animations to swipe gestures. It also brings 20 more security fixes and several minor bug fixes.

Top15 features and fixes - full changelog at TJC

Automated BTRFS balancing cleans
the File System on your phone
on Tuesday mornings, if connected
to charger. Enjoy!
  • Android support: Fixed issue where Android applications stopped launching. Fixed issue where timezone was incorrect in Android applications after changing timezones in Settings. Improved Android applications' access to images stored on external MicroSD card
  • Maps: Enabled Landscape support
  • Calendar: Optimized Calendar's Hour view to have less unused space. Fixed issue where deleting one occurrence in a recurring calendar event on Jolla didn't delete the occurrence from the web-server (Google Calendar)
  • Clock: Fixed rare situation where clock alarm was dismissed but then accidentally snoozed with the press of the Power key
  • Email: You can now edit and save draft emails from POP accounts. IMAP4 passwords using special characters (like "äöü") work ok now.
  • Gallery and ambiences: Images transferred to device do show up in Gallery after a short while without the need to restart the device.
  • Media: Music files transferred to device do show up in Media after a short while without the need to restart the device.
  • Security fixes: 20 reported vulnaribilities fixed
  • System, updating: Amount of free memory is now checked to be sufficient before SailfishOS update is downloaded and installed, however, this change will help not until you update the OS the next time!
  • System, BTRFS: An automatic balancing of the file system is executed in the background on Tuesday mornings starting at 3AM, on condition that the phone is connected to a battery charger.

NOTE: In your first time (next Tuesday, early morning, if connected to charger) this automated balancing operation might take a while, in some cases even hours, and your phone seems very sluggish while it's running. Just let it run, and you'll enjoy a smoother phone when it's done. I've done it three times manually, and it's always been very helpful. Do not disconnect the charger while it's running! MORE INFO ON THE MANUAL PROCESS
  • Look and feel, user interface: New animations, visible for example when you drop an application to home screen with swipe-from-side gesture.
  • Virtual keyboard: For better two-finger writing, it's now possible to split the keyboard layout when the phone is used on landscape. The word prediction is moved to the middle area in this mode. If you don't like it, you can turn it off in the Settings. Dutch and Turkish layouts added
  • Clock (app): Basic landscape support. Not enabled yet, might require app update available later.
  • Media (app): Partial landscape support, for example on player controls / albums. Not enabled yet, might require app update available later.
  • Accounts: Allow landscape mode in Account settings. Enable Yahoo! contacts sync.
  • Accounts: DOWNGRADE to Facebook sync: "Facebook API has been updated to 2.2, which unfortunately causes loss of features (chat or contacts sync, see the end of the roadmap email).

"We are awaiting an approval of the new implementation from Facebook, until then you will unfortunately experience a broken Facebook account (including being unable to share status message and photos)."

    Note:
It seems that Facebook chat might still work on some devices, including notifications on incoming chat messages.

Known issues, not yet fixed on this release

  • Browser: After zooming, some pages might dislocate links or buttons. Affecting on some web sites only. Recommended to use other browsers (webcat, Android browsers) on these sites until this is fixed.
  • Turn by turn voice navigation: This feature is not coming up, according to Jolla's answer at TJC. However, several Android navigation apps are reported to work just fine. I'm recommending NavFree from Aptoide Store
  • SD card: sometimes the card must be manually reattached to access the files
  • Video recording: Audio quality is reduced after few seconds of recording
  • Video codec issue: Videos recorded with Jolla camera require converting from H.263 format to any HTML5 supported format to play in Jolla's own web browser.

Äijänpäivänjärvi is already tested by Early Adopters

Jolla announced Early Adopter Program on January 2015, enabling delivering the release candidates to volunteers among the customers earlier than the update is released for public. These Early Adopters received Äijänpäivänjärvi update already on April 16th, and this final version for their additional feedback already on April 28th. You can find more information at:

Problems after updating the system?

The next Sailfish OS update?

  • If Jolla will follow their latest announcement of monthly releases, already in June. However, There have been only 3 public releases during the last 8 months, so let's prepare for some longer time. Maybe Jolla should first update their releasing schedule?

Previous updates

Sailfish OS Äijänpäivänjärvi - the name

We've kept you up to date with these Finnish lakes which Jolla is using in their release naming. Äijänpäivänjärvi is a nice sized (52 ha) lake located in Eastern Finland near Lieksa. And here's the translation to Jolla's most difficult update name so far:
  • "Äijän" is a Finnish word used in meaning "codger's" or "old man's"
  • "päivän" stands for "Day's"
  • "Äijänpäivä", however, was used in the meaning of Easter in Karelia, Finland!
  • "järvi" is a lake
  • The whole name "Äijänpäivänjärvi" translates to "Lake of Easter"
  • Pronunciation, both written and spoken, can be found here
This release is also called u13 / upgrade13. Upgrade 12 was never released to public. Nowadays, "update" stands for minor fixes (previously "hotfix") and "upgrade" is used when the release includes more changes, like this one

There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than a few updates coming up.
