Sami Pienimäki is the CEO & Co-founder of Jolla Ltd, developing the world’s only independent mobile operating system, the Sailfish OS. Sami is an opportunistic tech entrepreneur seasoned in international startup development, fund raising and strategy development thruout the fearless journey of establishing and sailing the world’s only independent mobile OS. Besides that, he loves family, skiing and cars.

First Sailfish OS mobile product, the Jolla Smartphone, was launched in November 2013. In November 2014 Jolla introduced the Jolla Tablet, winning Best of Show recognition at MWC 2015 Barcelona. During 2015 – 2016, Jolla started to license Sailfish OS to device vendors and system integrators around the world. First major licensing partner was Indian smartphone vendor Intex Technologies in 2015. During 2016 – 17 Jolla has continued licensing Sailfish OS to regional players in Russia, China and LATAM markets. Jolla has a regional licensing strategy and is currently the only company offering mobile operating system licensing for regional players.
This speech focuses on opening up the opportunity and business model of building mobile OS in the market dominated by industry giants. Further, we’ll look into case example on open collaboration with the Sailfish community and collaboration with Sony Open Devices Program, and how to build world-class products in open collaboration.
