Jouni's introduction in short, not an accurate translation:
Jouni first talks about the horizontal navigation carousel, presenting home screen, quick settings on the Notification screen, and tells about the Partner Space as the third part of the carousel, not visible on devices shipped to Indiegogo campaign participants.
Then he opens Facebook (Android app), telling the Jolla Tablet support Android apps as well, and shows how any running apps are dropping back to the multitasking home screen with a simple swipe. Below the home, Jouni presents the application grid, and then he shares how to lock the device either via lock menu on top, or using a lock button on side.
Interviewer asks about the hardware and competitive aspects. Jouni mentions especially the Retina display and tells about the introduction of the Jolla Tablet at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, and the award "Best of Mobile" for Jolla Tablet, considering it was achieved mostly because of the unique user interface. Jouni himself finds the following sweet spots on Jolla Tablet, in the marketing point of view:
- Sailfish OS user interface
- Retina resolution display with great quality
- amount of memory
- and all that for a reasonable price
But as the most important one, he mentions the user experience. In the end, interviewer asks about security of the device, and Jouni begins with telling the security starts from fully open source OS:
Note: It's not always straight forward to translate Finnish from spoken words. How I understood Jouni's words, as a Finnish native, is that the security will be built on openness when Sailfish OS reaches that stage. Note also that not all parts can be opened, as some parts are commercial, owned by 3rd parties. Please refer to the latest words by Juhani Lassila and Antti Saarnio on this post to know where Jolla currently stands on this.Interviewer: You have highlighted the security on this device, so what kind of security features does it have?
Jouni: Well, first and foremost, the security starts from that this is a fully open source operating system, so that anyone may review it and verify it, and thereby see there's nothing to hide. And so the security is to be built on transparency. This is perhaps the simplest explanation at this point to your question.
Kauppalehti also shared news from a Press conference today (Friday, August 14th, 2015) at Jolla Helsinki headquarters. In short:
- Jolla Tablet will race against iPad mini in the same serie
- Almost 10 000 devices were pre-ordered during Indiegogo campaign reaching USD 2.5 million funding. Most of the orders came from Finland, but also U.S and Germany had a lot of interest in advance.
- The corresponding R & D Jouni Mikkonen says that the transparency of the operating system enables the detection of security
- Tablets will be shipped equipped with next generation Sailfish OS 2.0 user interface. The same user interface will be available as a software update for Jolla Phone owners during the next month

Thanks for sharing! Can you give a little more detailed translation of what was said in the interview? Not necessary word by word, but main topics except what you've already mentioned. Most intresting for me personally was the moment when Jouni Mikkonen was launching Facebook app and if I did unerstand him right (I know not a single word in Finnish) he was mentioning SFOS apps, Android apps and… iOS apps???
ReplyDeleteThanks for asking. I added a short translation below the video - no iOS apps mentioned, but maybe something interesting. I was surprised myself about quick advance to open source OS.
DeleteThanks again (now for quick response and translation)! Really interesting info. And sorry for anonymous, didn't manage to login here with wordpress, some stupidity from my side )
DeleteIs Jouni Mikkonen one of their engineers, or is he a sales/marketing person?
ReplyDeleteWhat he says might be more credible if it he's one of their lead engineers.
He's in charge of product development. But for credibility, more important part is my word to word translation, as Finnish language totally misses all future forms for verbs. "se on" (fi) could be translated as "it is" or "it'll be", but I'll try to check with Jouni on that later to make sure. Currently, it's better to refer to Antti's earlier words.
DeleteIs this video available on other site like YouTube? Since 4:23 it became really fuzzy and I have no idea what is wrong...
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately not, but reloading the page should help. I've contacted Kauppalehti for another option, let's see if this get solved too
DeleteIssue solved, thanks for their great cooperation
DeleteIts interesting how we will close applications. Probably 'swipe down to close' will not be present anymore. Sad, very sad....
ReplyDeleteI agree - the loss of *swipe down to close* is/was a feature I also liked - bring it back please.
