[News] Lay-offs canceled at Jolla

Sailors at Jolla to get back on board

Lay-offs of 70 employees at Jolla have all been canceled, and Jolla is currently recruiting back their key resources. The aim is to continue with about half of the amount of Sailors compared to the situation before the lay-offs.

End of the year is perfect time for some good news, and this is not the only one. Teaser included

[News] Lay-offs canceled at Jolla

Worth a read? Please share:

News on lay-offs were shared on November 19th. Now, just one month later, There's some more positive news to share:
"Lay-offs has been canceled. We are currently discussing on personal level with our employees to recruit the key resources back, but many of the employees chose to cancel the contract of employment during the lay offs.", says Juhani Lassila, Head of Communications at Jolla
The lay-offs are not needed any more now that Jolla's financial situation got better. The community might be interested on who's actually getting back on board, but this is still early to tell. However, it seems that at least half of them might be sailing soon:
"Most of the laid-off employees were still under notice time, meaning that their work was not completed either. While the discussions are still going on I can't comment further on who's getting back on board and who's not. The aim, at least now in the beginning,  is to continue with about half of the previous amount of Sailors", Lassila adds.
Jolla will have a board meeting to discuss on the future activities, including what to do with the Jolla Tablet campaign which shipping is currently frozen, after Christmas time. Juhani Lassila:
"The continuation of different high concentration areas at Jolla will become apparent during the end the year, and we'll get back to that later."

Even more good news coming up

Sailfish OS porters, community group working voluntarily to get the operating system running on several different smartphones, has lately done some great success on porting Sailfish OS for Fairphone 2. and we might soon be able to add this great phone into the list of smartphones currently running Sailfish OS.

Credits of this first port goes to "mal-", "vakkov", and Philippe De Swert. Great work all of you, Sail On!

  2. Nice news! When I read the Jolla blog, I see many angry people. For the company and for the future of Sailfish it would be best that everybody who backed for a tablet on IGG, gets soon a refund from Jolla. Why? because the whole idea of a tablet was a mistake (far too early), because some tablets are 'lost' on taobao, because the specifications and possibilities of the tablet are outdated now and because some not favourable changes were made with the tablet and finally, because there are only a few apps for the tablet on Aptoide. I decided to ask for a refund, but I don't know how.

    1. Thanks for your comment. I've also seen the amount of negativity on their blog. I think that one of the main reasons for that is actually the quality of the posts; Jolla seems to share a lot more information to journalists instead of directly in their blog, which could also be "part of the plan" on their visibility/marketing.

On the "TabletGate" we might have more to share already in couple of weeks. The current way for refunding is only via the credit card company taking the payment, and each one has their own policies for those. Jolla might offer ways by themselves at some point - Their intention is either to deliver the tablets delayed even more or issue the refunds - but the schedule for either is unknown. Check back later when we have something more on that, meanwhile, let's enjoy the rest of the year with at least these nice news. All the best!

    1. The news coming up will talk about an unofficial community port, but it might include something nice regarding Android support as well. Let's see.

  7. I read some surprisingly negative posts elsewhere earlier. I do not know if these are people who would rather support some other platform, but are 'forced' to SF because other alternatives are failing worse. But then again, Ubuntu discussions are also extremely negative at times. I can live without a tablet, it does not anger me beoyond civilized behaviour. Though would be glad to get it or a new intex phone instead?

  8. People are "negative" to use an euphemism, because they payed money for a prduct they did not receive. It takes very little to understand this.
Nobody ever mentioned the "alternatives" apart from those people like you. On the other hand, correct me if I am wrong, you are on jolla paybook, aren't you?

    2. Sorry, my bad, I was asking to the guy who commented before me (didn't press the replay button)

  9. Ah, and I forgot to add that Jolla PR lied several times about the tablets, this reason only would be enough to be "negative"

    1. Not sute to what comment you added that (Anonymous). I'm looking at all the positive and negative feedback all over as just feedback, and looking forward for the sailors in the company to jut take their lessons :) Each negative comment sure has a fair reason to be posted, so I agree with you.

  10. The Jolla Company urgently needs a woman for communication. Until now, even in the latest blog post they have thrown oil on the fire by making undiplomatic remarks. This is the main reason why so many people express their anger in such an overt way. Evidently not all IT men are good communicators.

    1. Do you have anyone particular in mind? After Marc left a new PR face would be just great, bringing some new blow to the sails in overall too.

  11. Generally spoken women are better in communication than men. But I do not have a particular women in mind. Marc Dillon was an overestimated charismatic leader , hailed like a messiah. That's not what I am pointing at.
